IL3-UB and ESSKA unite academic and clinical expertise in two micro-credentials in arthroscopic surgery
The University of Barcelona Institute for Lifelong Learning (IL3-UB) and the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery & Arthroscopy (ESSKA) are jointly launching two specialised university micro-credentials in arthroscopic surgery of the meniscus and the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). These programmes offer advanced, highly specialised training for trauma and orthopaedic surgery professionals.
This collaboration brings together the academic and teaching expertise of the University of Barcelona with the clinical knowledge and European training standards promoted by ESSKA, one of the international scientific societies leading in the field of sports traumatology, knee surgery and arthroscopy. The result is a training programme with a clear international focus, aimed at updating and specialising professionals in the sector.
The two micro-credentials, which will be taught between October 2026 and the first quarter of 2027, share a professionalising and eminently practical approach, aimed at the direct transfer of knowledge to clinical practice. The training includes surgical training at the Bellvitge Campus of the University of Barcelona Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, with theoretical and practical sessions that allow students to replicate real surgical situations so they can more easily acquire advanced skills.
The micro-credential in Arthroscopic Meniscus Surgery offers a comprehensive overview of the current approach to meniscal pathology. The programme reviews the fundamentals of arthroscopic portal placement and standard meniscectomy techniques, while also delving into strategies to promote meniscal healing and the various meniscal suture techniques. The training also includes the management of complex injuries, such as ramp lesions or meniscal root tears, as well as the study of allografts and meniscal substitutes as advanced therapeutic options.
For its part, the micro-credential in Arthroscopic Anterior Cruciate Ligament Surgery focuses on updating surgical techniques related to ACL reconstruction and on decision-making in complex clinical situations. The programme addresses aspects such as reconstruction in paediatric patients, revision surgery or lateral extra-articular tenodesis, and incorporates practical training aimed at improving surgical safety and patients' functional outcomes.
Both micro-credentials are taught by ESSKA faculty of internationally recognised prestige and are part of the IL3-UB's commitment to offering lifelong learning pathways tailored to the needs of healthcare professionals. Through this collaboration, the two institutions are making it easier to access cutting-edge methodologies and specialised knowledge in a constantly evolving field.
