DomusVi

Training for better care.

DomusVi

Training as a tool to care for a team which cares for people.

Benchmark brand in the Spanish healthcare sector

Domus VI is a benchmark brand in the Spanish healthcare sector, a sphere with constantly growing niche employment and in which just DomusVi Spain has over 20,500 professionals managing 162 centres for dependent elderly people and mental health, in which it provides care for almost 25,000 people, between residents and outpatient care, in addition to the home care units (home help and tele-assistance services).

  • Business goal

The company takes on a challenge which affects the overall healthcare sector: the need for the professionals to have an increasingly professionalized and specialized response in the sphere of care for dependent persons, in order to meet, with maximum guarantees, the management and daily demands of a healthcare centre.

  • Challenges

The wide range of factors that the managers of a home for the elderly need to tackle (the care management in itself, health management, accommodation, administration, team leadership…) and the considerable emotional impact inherent in the sphere of caring for dependent persons, require comprehensive training, which provides very diverse tools which enable the sector’s professionals to cope with very complex daily life.

    • There is a clear need to offer management positions a development plan which trains them to confront all spheres of a complex management which goes from the daily management of the patients, to the relations with relatives, staff management, leadership of the different work groups and the legal terms inherent in the sphere.

    • For Domus VI, it is essential to empower their executives in order to equip them with all the resources and knowledge required to consolidate them in their positions and enable them to carry out their complex duties with complete satisfaction.

  • Diagnosis and value proposition

Domus VI, aware that having the best possible training is essential to prepare its professionals and moreover develop their loyalty, has chosen to create, through the DomusVi Foundation, its own Corporate University taking the initiative of generating its own training programmes which offer a comprehensive solution to the needs of its professionals.

    • The definition of the training proposal started from the needs observed by the management of DomusVi, in addition to the know-how of the Institute of Lifelong Learning IL3 University of Barcelona in a clear commitment by the Foundation to offer excellence and a unique qualification in the sector.

    • Thus, the Domus VI University, the first corporate university in the care sector, was launched in the academic year 2016-2017 with the programme University Expert in Management and Administration of Care for Dependent Persons Centres and Services intended for executive positions and future care home managers.

    • The programme was designed in accordance with the company’s needs to equip managers and staff promoted to executive positions with all the tools and skills necessary to manage care for dependent persons services. The training proposal had to respond to aspects related to leadership and healthcare models, but also marketing, human resource management, the related legislation.

    • The resulting proposal, particular and specific to DomusVi, included the collaboration of internal educators from the company itself, university lecturers and expert consultants in the different fields, all with recognized prestige and a long track record.

    • Apart from the curricular content, the training experience was also of use to strengthen internal networking. The experience shared in the successive face-to-face meetings reaffirmed the relations between executives, strengthening ties and establishing a true support network, a space in which to share good practices and exchange ideas, advice and knowledge for the benefit of everyone.

  • Impact and results

The first edition of Expert in Management and Administration of Care for Dependent Persons Centres and Services was valued very positively.

In addition to the expansion of knowledge which led to an improvement of skills, the training represented an opportunity for the participants to leave behind their demanding daily activities and to immerse themselves in a training area and focus on their professional development and continuous improvement.

Overall, the programme offered a satisfactory response to knowledge management and promotion of internal talent needs with the aim of consolidating one of the keys to the corporate culture of Domus VI: ‘Caring for the people who care for people’.

This initial initiative gave rise to the possibility of implementing other training pathways, aimed at other professional profiles of the company, which are already being carried out.

The possibility is likewise raised of equipping the Corporate University, in the future, with an international dimension, reaffirming the commitment to the specialization of its professionals which leads to the healthcare quality of the  Domus VI centres and strengthens the organization’s corporate sentiment.
