Enrolment conditions of the University of Barcelona Institute for Lifelong Learning (including Els Juliols UB and Gaudir UB):
1. Programmes and courses
The University of Barcelona Institute for Lifelong Learning (IL3-UB) offers lifelong learning programmes under the framework of Articles 36 and 37 of Royal Decree 822/2021, of 28 September, as well as its own lifelong learning courses. The programmes taught by the IL3-UB are governed by the Regulations governing lifelong learning at the University of Barcelona, approved by the University’s Governing Council on 1 March 2023. [Postgraduate Agency Regulations]. It can also organises short-term activities (seminars, workshops, and courses) and is responsible for the Els Juliols UB and Gaudir UB courses.
2. Admission requirements
Your enrolment will be considered void if you do not meet the admission requirements (payment, submission and academic validation of the required documents within the established deadlines).
For master’s degrees, postgraduate courses, expert courses, and university advanced-level courses (those requiring a university degree that are not regulated by the new Royal Decree 822/2021), you will not be awarded the qualification if you do not hold the qualification required for access. In these cases, and provided the programme allows it, you will receive a university extension diploma (if the programme does not provide certification for non-degree holders, you will be issued with a certificate of attendance from the IL3-UB).
For lifelong learning master’s degrees, specialisation diplomas, expert courses, and university advanced-level courses (those requiring a university degree that are regulated by the new Royal Decree 822/2021), you will not be awarded the qualification if you do not hold the qualification required for access. In these cases, and provided the programme allows it, you will receive a higher university diploma or an expert certificate (depending on the programme’s credits). If the programme is not intended for students who are not degree-holders, you will be issued a certificate of attendance from the IL-UB.
International students from countries outside the European Union (non-EU students) must have a valid student visa to enter the Schengen Area. The student visa is a requirement under current Spanish legislation for inclusion in the General Social Security Scheme. It is the student’s responsibility to have the necessary documentation to complete the enrolment process.
Please be advised that the validity of your enrolment is conditional upon the accuracy of the information provided, compliance with the admission requirements and applicable legal regulations, adherence to the conditions stated on the programme’s web page, and full payment within the established deadlines. Furthermore, if any required documentation is missing according to the enrolment regulations, this notification serves as a formal request for you to submit the necessary documents within 10 days from the date of enrolment.
3. Internships
Internships are educational activities undertaken by students and supervised by the IL3-UB. Their purpose is to allow students to apply and complement the knowledge gained through academic training and to facilitate the acquisition of skills that prepare them to work professionally.
Internships may be carried out in companies and institutions at a national or international level, and, exceptionally, within the IL3-UB itself, depending on the chosen mode.
Given the educational nature of internships, they cannot under any circumstances give rise to employment relationship obligations nor be used to replace paid employment positions.
There are two types of internships:
a) Curricular internships: these are subjects (compulsory or optional) and academic activities included in the official university degree or university-certified degree study programme that foresee such internships.
b) Extracurricular internships: these are voluntary academic activities not included in the study programme, undertaken during the student’s academic training.
As of 1 January 2024, undertaking external academic internships involves the student’s inclusion in the General Social Security Scheme, whether remunerated or not, in accordance with Royal Decree-Law 2/2023, of 16 March. For this reason, it is necessary to have the student’s Social Security affiliation number to properly manage the internship. To comply with this regulation, the IL3-UB may request this information directly from the Social Security authorities through their official database access service.
Students must have a Social Security affiliation number. If you do not know or do not have this number, you can obtain it at the following link: Solicitar el Número de la Seguridad Social.
International students from non-European Union countries (non-EU students) who are required to undertake or are interested in undertaking external academic internships must have a valid student visa to enter the Schengen Area. The student visa is a requirement under current Spanish legislation for inclusion in the General Social Security Scheme. It is the student’s responsibility to have the necessary documentation to complete the enrolment process.
4. Computer equipment and Internet connection
Enrolled students are responsible for having an Internet connection and the electronic devices necessary to properly participate in and follow the teaching activities, including access to the virtual campus, regardless of the mode of delivery of the courses offered by the IL3-UB.
5. Issuance of diplomas or certificates
For programmes comprising multiple courses or modules, you must choose at the time of enrolment whether to register for the full programme or for individual courses within it. If you enrol in the complete programme, the certificates or diplomas for the individual courses or modules cannot be issued separately, in accordance with Article 38 of the Regulations governing lifelong learning at the University of Barcelona, approved by the Governing Council on 1 March 2023. [Postgraduate Agency Regulations].
6. Course cancellation
The IL3-UB (including Els Juliols UB and Gaudir UB) reserves the right to cancel an educational programme for academic reasons those related to teaching staff, providing notice within the following timeframes:
- Educational programmes of 15 credits or more: 10 days before the scheduled start date.
- Educational programmes of less than 15 credits: 3 days before the scheduled start date.
7. Enrolment
The enrolment fee will not be refunded once the programme has started or after 14 calendar days from the date of payment. Otherwise, the right of withdrawal may be exercised. A refund will only be issued if the applicant has not been admitted to the programme or if it is cancelled.
8. Right of withdrawal
Enrolled students may exercise their right of withdrawal within 14 calendar days from the date of enrolment (in any case, the 14-day period begins from the date of the first payment), provided that the programme has not yet started.
To do so, they must complete the designated form and send it signed by email to admisiones@il3.ub.edu.
The form can be accessed via the following link: https://www.il3.ub.edu/sites/default/files/media/file/Formulari_desistiment_CAT_definitiu_il3.pdf
Students enrolled in programmes that offer both face-to-face or remote learning and option for the on-site format may exercise their right of withdrawal if, for academic reasons, the format is changed to fully online. This right can be exercised within 14 calendar days from the date of notification by email. If no withdrawal request is made within this period, it will be understood that the student has accepted and continued with the learning format proposed by the institution.
Exceptions:
Enrolled students are informed that the right of withdrawal will not apply after 14 calendar days from the date of enrolment, nor if the programme has started or has been fully completed.
In the case of study visa refusal – for students enrolled in IL3-UB face-to-face programmes – the student must submit official proof of the visa denial (ministerial resolution) by email (admisiones@il3.ub.edu) before the programme starts, in order to request a refund of the enrolment fee paid up to the notification date.
Please be informed that once the programme has started or is being studied, the right of withdrawal will no longer apply, in accordance with Article 103 a) of Law 3/2014, of 27 March, which amends the revised text of the General Law on the protection of consumers and users and other complementary laws, approved by Royal Legislative Decree 1/2007, of 16 November.
9. Study grants
Discounts are not retroactive. To benefit from any discount offered by the IL3-UB (including Els Juliols UB and Gaudir UB), you must provide proof of eligibility before enrolment is completed. Once the programme has started, the IL3-UB (including Els Juliols UB and Gaudir UB) will not apply a discount. If you miss a payment, the discount will be voided, and the IL3-UB will claim 100% of the official fee without discount.
More information can be found at the following link.
10. Payment of the enrolment fee
Failure to pay the enrolment fee within the deadlines established during the enrolment process will automatically suspend students' rights. Enrolment must be completed before the teaching period begins, except in cases where payment is made in instalments. In all cases, the student is obliged to pay the full enrolment fee. Enrolment may also require payment of other fees formally approved by the competent bodies of the University of Barcelona.
11. Places and dates
The location and/or date of delivery may change for academic reasons (calendar adjustments, need for additional teaching resources, etc.) and organisational or logistical reasons (space arrangements considering all courses offered). Any definitive change of location and/or date will be communicated to students at least fifteen days before the programme starts. Temporary or occasional changes will be notified with due notice, in a minimum of 24 hours. Changes of location will only occur within the same city where the programme was originally scheduled.
12. Programme learning formats
Face-to-face: programme requiring the attendance of the student group at a specific place and time. It involves travel to a single common location.
Face-to-face and remote: face-to-face programme, but allowing some students to attend sessions remotely. Students choose their attendance mode (face-to-face or remote) at enrolment and will maintain that option throughout the programme.
If one month before the start of the programme, a student experiences a change in circumstances (health, study visa, etc.) that prevents starting their studies in the selected format, they may request a format change by contacting the Admissions Office by email (admisiones@il3.ub.edu). The request will be considered depending on availability. If the change cannot be accommodated, the student will be offered the possibility of transferring to a different programme session.
Online: in this format, the programme is given asynchronously*. Some of our programmes may include occasional synchronous** activities.
Blended: programme (partly online and partly face-to-face) in which the online part is delivered asynchronously, while the face-to-face part requires the attendance of both students and teachers in a physical space.
Blended mode with remote option: programme (partly online and partly face-to-face) in which the online part is delivered asynchronously (asynchronous online), while the face-to-face part allows some students to attend face-to-face sessions remotely while the others are physically present.
*Asynchronous. Refers to those educational activities in which students, participants and/or teachers do not coincide in time or space, and which can take place at any time, independently of the participation of the educational activity's other participants.
**Synchronous. Refers to those educational activities that take place in real time. Therefore, the interaction between students, participants and teachers coincides in time (on a specific date and time) and space (physical or virtual, online or offline).
13. Exceptional situations
In the event of an exceptional, widespread situation that restricts access to educational facilities for reasons beyond the control of the IL3-UB, teaching for face-to-face programmes will continue in a hybrid format. This approach ensures that all planned activities in the course plan can proceed using the established methodology and evaluation system.
IMPORTANT NOTICE – ISSUE OF CERTIFICATES
The final certificate for the programme will be sent by the institution, provided that standard postal services are available. If, due to exceptional and external circumstances, standard post is not an option, the student will be responsible for the cost of any alternative delivery method. Certificates will be posted only to students residing outside the province of Barcelona. Students living within the province must collect their certificate in person.
