PRESENTATION

The microcredential in Arthroscopic Meniscus Surgery is designed to offer orthopaedic surgeons advanced didactic and practical training in the treatment of complex meniscus disorders. The programme is offered in collaboration with ESSKA (European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery & Arthroscopy), one of the leading international scientific societies in knee surgery and orthopaedic surgery.

Throughout the course, we will review the basics of arthroscopic portals, which are integrated into the multiportal approach to the knee, and look at the latest updates in highly prevalent clinical procedures, such as a meniscectomy. The programme also addresses how to maximise meniscal healing and incorporates criteria and strategies to promote healing according to the type of injury and its biomechanical and biological context.

One of the main focuses of the programmes is structured training in meniscal suture techniques – all-inside, outside-in and inside-out – which combines theoretical content with practical hands-on sessions in the laboratory. In addition, injuries of special clinical and technical relevance are addressed, such as ramp lesion repair and meniscal root tears, through practice on a cadaveric specimen, which allows skills to be consolidated in highly complex surgical scenarios.

Finally, the course includes the analysis of meniscal allografts and meniscal substitutes as therapeutic options in salvage cases and thus offers a comprehensive overview of the current approach to meniscal pathology.

Objectives

  • Provide a complete understanding of the anatomy, pathology, and arthroscopic treatment of the meniscus, from basic to advanced concepts.
  • Develop skills in knee arthroscopic techniques, including portal creation, meniscectomy, and meniscal repair strategies.
  • Improve participants' ability to perform complex meniscal procedures and explore advanced treatment options, such as ramp lesion repair and root tears and the implantation of allografts or meniscal substitutes.
  • Review and apply the principles of arthroscopic portal placement with special emphasis on optimised multiportal access to the knee joint.
  • Understand the biological and mechanical factors that influence meniscus healing and learn techniques to maximise repair success.
  • Practice and master meniscal suture techniques, including all-inside, outside-in and inside-out methods, through guided practical sessions in the laboratory.
  • Acquire practical experience in the repair of complex injuries - such as ramp lesion repair and root tears - and evaluate the indications for the use of allografts or meniscal substitutes in salvage cases.

THREE REASONS THIS IS FOR YOU

  • Programme with a professionalising and practical focus, which includes surgical training at the Bellvitge Campus of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona.
